Virgin Atlantic to fly twice daily to Johannesburg

Atlantic Airlines announced Thursday, March 15 that the airlines will be starting a second flight to Johannesburg. This will be taking effect on October 28.  This announcement comes after South African announced that they would be reducing their number of flights to one.

The second flight is scheduled to depart Heathrow at 1645 and landing in Johannesburg at 0540 the following day. The return leg will be leaving Johannesburg at 2220 and arriving back into Heathrow at 0730 the following day.

Tickets will be on sale starting March 24. With this added flight, Virgin Airlines is expecting to increase the number of passengers to 300,000 annually. Also, they seek to increase cargo capacity between the UK and South Africa.  According to Liezl Gericke, the head of Middle East and Africa routes for the airline, the new seats will actualize the expected 9% growth.

When buying tickets for the flight, it will include wifi. Passengers will have the option to choose between three new economy tickets - light, classic, and delight. The economy Delight will have a seat count of 36.

The flight will include free seat selection, priority check-in and boarding, and 34 inches more of leg room for those who like to fly more comfortably.

Virgin has said that this new flight “has been timed to enable customers to easily connect onto flights with Virgin Atlantic and Delta to over 200 US destinations, including Los Angeles and San Francisco”.   Passengers will make such connections in partnership with Delta Airlines.

Shai Weiss, COO of Virgin Atlantic says, “Virgin Atlantic has been proud to serve South Africa for over 21 years. Johannesburg is one of the most popular destinations on our network so we’re delighted to add a second daily service to create even more travel opportunities for our customers."
