Opposition to New Orleans streetcar expansion

The plans to even study the possible RTA expansion in New Orleans have faced opposition. The company that runs the streetcar line is planning on expanding New Orleans' streetcar line.  According to news reports, some people believe that the Regional Transit Authority needs to find a better way to make a study to determine if they should expand the Rampart-St. Claude line.

New Orleans has five different operation lines.  The entire system is operated by the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority. The total route traveled by all lines adds up to 35.9 km (22.3 mi).   These active lines transport an average of 21,600 passengers every day.

Today the operator of the streetcar lines is now looking forward to increasing the distance of one of the lines.

The plans as they are will be using the RTA's general operating fund to pay for the study of the issue.  However, Ride New Orleans believes that these funds should be used to make a thorough analysis of the entire RTA's operation instead. Ride New Orleans is an organization that seeks to establish a safe transportation system for New Orleans.

Given the importance of streetcars in New Orleans, Ride New Orleans is very interested in keeping governments accountable for their actions or the lack of them for that matter.

The RTA is granted federal funds for expansion. Board members of the company see it as a mistake to use the general operating fund to perform the comprehensive study Ride New Orleans proposes. In fact, they believe that this move would position RTA's board to lock down federal grants.

The plan is to extend this streetcar line in two directions.  With the current line expanding, the possibilities for danger increase.
